Monthly Recommendations: September 2006
This summer has been one of the hardest Israel has experienced in some time, but the North bore the brunt of the war. Therefore we are dedicating our recommendations this month to the North. If you have a chance to visit the area, whether it be to shoot a film or simply to enjoy the many recreational activities the North has to offer, here are some ideas.

Take a Walk through Wadi Nissnass in Downtown Haifa

Aromatic scents of lemon trees and distant sounds of crashing waves, sets the scene for Wadi Nissnass, the vibrant Haifa neighborhood that is a delight for the senses and makes for a captivating sightseeing destination. This authentic Mediterranean town, located in the Western Galilee, was built in the 1830’s, and since has served as a model for co-existence between Arabs and Jews. The stone lined streets house market vendors selling their array of goods – homemade pitas, specially ground coffee, and crafts galore. The lights, colors, Middle Eastern musicians, and children playing in the streets make this a perfect locale for the inspired still photographer.

The Bethlehem Haglilit Village

Founded as a Templar colony in 1906, this captivating village is an exquisite historic locale that we highly recommend you visit if you are looking to travel in the North of the country. Situated in the Lower Galilee, Bethlehem Haglilit offers a variety of activities. You can stroll through Main Street on foot observing the unique Templar architecture and surveying the local assortment of boutiques and coffee shops.
We strongly recommend you stay overnight at the exceptional country-style bed and breakfast, Neve Hagar. This charming guesthouse, in an original Templar building, is an excellent choice for staying in the North. They offer 4 fully equipped suites and 2 smaller rooms. The cost is $120 on weeknights for a couple, and on weekends reservations are for 2 nights minimum at $280 for a couple.

You can rent a bicycle and a guide who will show you around the village, or rent a bicycle and explore on your own for $12 a day.

“Neighbors” - The 22nd Haifa International Film Festival

This year’s Haifa Film festival will take place from the 7th-14th of October 2006. We recommend this terrific festival, featuring 150 new films from over 100 countries, and including panel discussions, special events, sessions with renowned filmmakers, open-air screenings, concerts and more.
The opening event is a tribute to the distinguished Israeli filmmaker, Judd Ne’eman, who directed numerous acclaimed documentary and feature films, and headed the Tel Aviv University film school, educating generations of Israeli artists. Ne’eman’s latest film, Nuzhat al-Fuad, will be premiering at the festival.
One of the focuses of this year’s festival is Cinema from the Balkans, showcasing films from Serbia, Bosnia, Kosovo, and more.
