Sites of Interest around
the Sea of Galilee
The area surrounding the Sea of Galilee provides
some the most beautiful views in Israel. The glistening
blue water shines in all directions. The views, history,
and nature make a visit to the Sea of Galilee worthwhile
and unforgettable. The following are a few places
worth visiting:
K’far Nahum and Tabgha
– This area contains archeological ruins, synagogues,
churches, natural springs and a boardwalk along the
Sea of Galilee on its northeastern side. The area
is considered holy by Christianity. In the heart of
the area is the K’far Nahum National Park that
has a beautiful hidden waterfall. This stunning spring
and waterfall flows into the Sea of Galilee creating
a magical web of pools of shallow and clear water,
all intertwined by brooks and small falls.
Yigal Alon House –
Yigal Alon, a prominent political leader in Israel
from before its foundation until the late 70’s,
when he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, lived
in a kibbutz in the Galilee called Kibbutz Ginosar.
His house on the kibbutz today is a museum dedicated
to the Galilee, its history and society. There are
several displays and exhibitions about the different
people who settled the Galilee as well as displays
dedicated to Alon.

Naharayim Peace Island
– Nehahryaim is at the meeting point between
two rivers and hence its name – Naharayim -
which means two rivers in Hebrew. Since Israel signed
a peace treaty with Jordan the place is called “Peace
Island.” At this site Pinchas Rottenberg “the
old man from Naharayim” set up an elaborate
electricity factory in 1927. There is a sound and
light show about the unique factory. Since the agreement
with Jordan the island is under Jordanian authority
however, based on the agreement, Israelis continue
to work the land. The agreement allows for the entrance
of tourists from Israel. Tel: 04-670-9143

Domus Galilae International
Center
Domus Galilea, a school for priests on the mount
of Beatitudes, is a unique and modern structure with
amazing views of the Sea of Galilee. The structure
is considered to be the dream of the Pope Paul VI
who wanted to build a center in Israel where Seminarians
could complete their formation before being ordained.
Pope Paul VI envisioned a large building on the mountains
surrounding the Sea of Galilee where Jesus lived and
performed many miracles. In 1999 the dream began to
develop into something more concrete when a place
was located at the top of the Mount of Beatitudes,
above the Church of Beatitudes. Shortly before the
millennium and right before the pope’s visit
to the Mount of Korazim, the corner stone was laid
for the Domus Galilae.
The structure is built in a modern architectural
style, with three floors connected by stairs facing
the sea. On the top floor there is a conference room
- a round room with large windows that can seat 300
people. From the room there is an exit to a large
balcony that looks out over the sea. The ceiling is
in the shape of a goblet with colorful stripes through
which light enters the room. On the same floor there
is a spectacular chapel surrounded by small iron statues
depicting scenes from the New Testament, and colorful
light enters the space through stained glass windows.
On the top floor there is an inner courtyard with
a sparkling marble floor and vegetation, surrounded
on all sides by hallways with pillars. On the same
floor there is a large library with a glass shell
in its center for silent study. The lower floor is
for the priests and students living quarters. The
entrance is a large space with modern lighting, leather
couches, and an inner patio with olive trees, surrounded
by flowers. The building is covered on the outside
with special stone that was brought to Israel from
Florence.
Entrance is free with a priest guide.
Open every day from 9:00am-12:30pm, 3:30pm –
5:00pm. Closed on Sunday.
