International Shakespeare
Festival at the Cameri Theater, Tel Aviv
One of Tel Aviv’s foremost theaters is hosting
a festival celebrating the works of William Shakespeare
and the works inspired by his writings. From May 3 –
June 2, the theater will host a variety of plays such
as “King Lear,” “Hamlet, and “A
Mid Summer Night’s Dream.” There will also
be special events including a monodrama by the well-known
British actor Steven Berkoff, called “Shakespeare’s
Villains,” and British actress Susannah York performing
the monodrama, “The Loves of Shakespeare’s
Women.” Throughout the month there will be screenings
of classic Shakespeare films in the theater’s
auditoriums. The gala opening will be held on May 5
at 11:00 and will include a panel discussion on Shakespeare’s
works and performances by the Cameri theater company.
The theatre also offers some of their most popular plays
with simultaneous English translation.

Photography Exhibit at Beit
Avi Chai
In a new building, in the center of Jerusalem, sits
Beit Avi Chai (Avi Chai House), a center dedicated
to encouraging and promoting Israeli and Jewish culture.
The center hosts various lectures and events, and
for the next few months (there is no closing date
yet) a photo-exhibit entitled “Diaspora”
is on display. The display is dedicated to the works
of Frederic Brenner, a Paris-born photographer who
spent 25 years traveling and spending time with more
than 40 Jewish communities around the world. The exhibit
includes unique photographs made up of an eclectic
and moving mix of faces and communities. If you have
an hour to spare in Jerusalem and are looking for
an interesting cultural experience, this is a good
option. The exhibit is free.

Israel Festival 2007
The annual Israel Festival will take place this year
between May 24 and June 10. The Israel Festival is
an arts festival that brings together an eclectic
group of international and Israeli performers from
the disciplines of dancing, theater, and music. Performances
will include a Chinese acrobatic troupe, classical
music concerts and many more unique shows. The majority
of the performances will be held in Jerusalem, with
a few taking place in Tel Aviv. The festival includes
free performances as well as nightly jazz concerts.
This year’s performers hail from Switzerland,
China, Germany, Uzbekistan, Hungary, Holland, Spain
and much more.
