Holy Land Scenes 1906 -
The Imberger Album of Colored Photos - Then and Now,
by Yoel Amir
We came across a stunning and interesting book which
we recommend for this month’s recommendations.
We think that it will make a wonderful gift and provide
great memories from Israel.
Here is the book description
A century has passed since Friedrich and Christian
Imberger, members of the German Templer Colony in
Jerusalem, published a photo album intended to serve
as a souvenir to remind pilgrims and tourists to the
Holy Land of some of the sites and scenes they visited.
The original black-and-white photos were taken by
August Trüb, the owner of a studio for the production
of color lithographs in Aarau, Switzerland. He simultaneously
painted an aquarelle of every scene to enable his
expert workers to prepare sixteen stone plates, each
for one single color. The 29 colored photos in this
album were produced by this long, drawn-out process.
More on this technology in Yoel Amir's essay.

Catch a Film under the Stars
One of the pleasures of summer in Israel is the reassurance
that the weather will be stable, which means - always
hot. Despite the warm temperatures there is no rainfall
in the summer allowing for a plethora of outdoor events
around the country. After a packed day on a film shoot,
you can relax, sit back and watch a movie on a huge
screen with the sound of the ocean waves splashing
on the shore just a few meters away. In August you
will have several opportunities to watch films at
two outdoor locations: the Tel Aviv Port and the Caesarea
Port.
Every Tuesday at the refurbished Tel Aviv Port you
can catch some mainstream flicks:
7.8. - Whale Rider, 2002, New Zealand
14.8. – Bend it like Beckham, 2002, United Kingdom
21.8. – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, USA
28.8. – Ocean’s Eleven, 2001, USA
Caesarea Nights – part of the summer events
of the Caesarea port are a series of film nights dedicated
to the great Charlie Chaplin. The films will be screened
on Wednesday nights. Along with the film screenings,
the port will create a Chaplin-like atmosphere. There
will be music from the films, coffee shops with black
and white tablecloths, art-work stands, food stands
and more. Entrance is from 7:00pm and the film screening
will begin at 8:00pm.
1.8. – The Gold Rush, 1925
8.8. – The Great Dictator, 1941
